The judges found it a bit difficult to judge sports action and sports
feature in the same category, but felt this was the strongest and most
unusual moment, both because of the size difference of the
combatants and the seemingly purposeful poke to the eyes. Judges
wished the caption had better explained the moment. Judges really
like the second place photograph for its composition and expression
and had a difficult time choosing between first and second place.
Finally decided that the wrestling picture was a more unusual
moment. The third place photograph was also named State Wrestling
and is an excellent wrestling action photograph with key action and
expression and good use of shallow depth of field.
