Judges Comments

#1 The lariat framed the subjects and the background elements worked nicely. #2 Framed all elements nicely and the photojournalist was in the right place at the right time. #3 Nice moment but it appears a little over-worked/sharpened. Additional overall notes on all entries: First, caption writing on all entries in all categories could be improved. Multiple AP Style violations, spelling, and punctuation errors. Unnecessary use of "poses for a photo" or identifying two people in an image by left and right when if you identify the main person/subject by direction, you don't need the other (left or right). Second, editors (both photo and copy editors) need to be better when coaching and mentoring young (and perhaps even older) journalists. This judging panel understands that newsrooms are shrinking, but it is imperative that those left behind carry on and do a better job for the ones following in our footsteps. There were too many over-exposed/grainy/loose crops/redundant images (in photo series).
