Judges Comments

The top two of these winners were presented as stories. We really liked the Hamburg Flood pictures because of the attention to detail as a result of opening up the aperture on very long glass. It was so interesting to see the whole world in focus from that distance. Most of us have a habit of deploying very little depth of field with our telephotos to lock or rack the subject in the frame. We all enjoyed the style of this shoot. It was like getting the same amount of information one would get with a wide angle, but instead using a 400mm. Love it. Second place was for flooding pictures, also. Technically, these images were spot on and we loved the reflecting tree composition. Third place was a simple picture of an apparent shooting victim in an ambulance. The flashing red lights in the evening scene add to its interest.
