Southeast – September 2018 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

First: This selection of images worked well to communicate the planning, disaster relief efforts, damage, and most importantly the emotion that Hurricane Florence caused. Images are consistently well-composed and we appreciated the nuance in each frame. It’s full of quiet moments that speak to the ways that humans experienced the hurricane and don’t focus solely on the destruction. Second: We were surprised to see a lot of images that we don’t usually expect with hurricane coverage that gave us an understanding of the full scope from pre-storm through the aftermath. Third: The access and trust that the photographer built with the family is admirable. The images conveyed enough of the story to stand alone.
