First place had the most powerful reaction of the spot news images. It’s a well-composed frame that shows us we’re at the scene of a crime, and the caption tells us that the mother has just lost her son, adding to the photo’s impact (also, kudos to getting the mother’s name in a tough situation). Second place has a bit of a sloppy composition that could benefit from a crop, (crop person at left out, maybe take a bit from the top), but the reaction was still strong and the school in the background gives us a nice sense of place. Third place lacked much action, but the unique angle and newsworthiness of the image helped it rise to the top.
