Tell the reader, and the judges, how much snow was expected or if it was predicted to be the largest snow fall in years in that area, or if schools were going to be closed for days, etc. That AP style caption is the journalism in photojournalism and demonstrates to copy editors/newsroom that we understand the information gathering part of our jobs.
1) Incorporated a novel way to photograph people sledding. Pair that image with a second photo of a tight face and there is a section front package.
2) A sweet moment that makes for an excellent weather feature. And it's perfectly cropped.
3) The pattern of the band and selective focus makes this photo. However, cropping up from the bottom brings the viewer to the horn player in focus faster.
