The photographer took advantage of the fire’s light and smoke to make some very compelling images of the prescribed burns in California. The seventh image of the fire reflected in the firefighter’s sunglasses was particularly strong. This entry displayed excellent visual variety and commitment to covering the fires on multiple days, with the sequencing of the images displaying the arc of the fires from beginning to end. The other two entries both had some very strong images (which might have fit better in GENW or FTSG categories), but unfortunately we feel they didn’t met the photo essay’s requirement of a narrative arc. They were a nice set of images, but didn’t demonstrate much cause and effect, or the impacts past the one day these photos were taken on.
