Judges Comments

The portrait category was much stronger than General News with good use of light all around. The first place had environmental cues that contributed nicely to the portrait. The second place portrait had a nice moment, though we wish there was more background in the cutline. The basement setting in the third place portrait contributed to the moody atmosphere which matched the story. It should be noted that there were several entries that didn't make the cut because the photographer didn't get names. As photojournalists, that should be the rare exception rather than the rule, especially in regard to portraits.
