1st place - Without a doubt you see the scale of a dramatic moment. The silhouette is elevated by the hint of the flashlight the firefighter holds. It also helps to draw your eyes towards the gigantic mound on fire. Well composed. 2nd place - The moment captured is an easy read with visual context from the framing of the school bus to the officer demonstrating the field sobriety test. You immediately know the gravity of the situation unfolding. Just seeing the school bus partially in the frame adds a sense of anxiety and questions to the scene. Not to mention the officer towering over the driver in size also heighten the photo’s dramatic appeal. For contest coordinator: Out of the six entries in this category, only two rose to the occasion as obvious winners. We decided not to award the 3rd place.
