In judging this category, we asked “Who took us through something?” The first-place entry felt like it had a beginning, middle, and end and moved us through the NBA finals with a combination of sports feature and sports action. If anything, we would have liked more images after Haliburton went down and seen more of a reaction to that. We might have played with the order differently and tried a tighter crop on the crowd’s foul call reaction photo but otherwise a decent story. The soccer photos were nice but had a couple of redundant goal celebrations. We love the photo of the player walking through the sprinklers to cool off. Third place had a nice collection of photos from NASCAR that were beyond the obvious. The pit row photo has some great light from late in the day juxtaposed against the neon-like bright lights of the pit signs.
