East – April 2025 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

First Place: There were great moments captured in “Argentina Recyclers,” but it definitely needed a tighter edit. We chose this photo story as the winner because it is apparent that the photographer spent a lot of time with the subjects to tell the full story. Second Place: “Protest” also needed a much tighter edit. The photos were very repetitive with some of the same people and similar moments throughout the photo story. But again, great moments were captured, and kudos to the photographer for getting in the action to tell the story. Third Place: The “Dry Cleaning” story could have been told with just a few photos instead of nine. There were some good photos, but could have dropped most that felt unnecessary or repetitive. Alternate: There were some good single images in “Power Struggle,” but it felt very repetitive and didn't seem to tell a story. We liked the portrait and felt like it could have placed in the portrait category.
