Judges Comments

First Place: A clean photo that draws us into the protestors, capturing individual emotion, alongside depth that provides a sense of scale. Maintaining the detail on the sign, without it becoming the focus, adds context. There is nice light, good color and great catchlights in the eyes. This was a nice moment and the photographer did a great job getting close to the action. Second Place: Another nice image that captures emotion during peak action. The water splashing off of his arms and body adds some nice movement. This image was toned well and is framed well, despite all the difficulties. One judge didn’t love the backwards text in the sign to the right, but we also enjoyed the context that sign added. Great sharp focus! Third place: We don’t generally love backs, but what really stands out is the person connecting with the mural. We understand the importance of the story in this image to give it context. For what this photographer was documenting we thought they did a great job of telling this story. It was a difficult thing to photograph spatially and the photographer kept everything in the frame that was necessary. It was a great addition to have at least one of the three subjects faces in frame. Honorable Mention: We liked where things were going with the nursing photo, with a nice expression and even some backlight creating some separation. What we would have liked to have seen is perhaps a tighter crop that could add some focus and improve composition. Category Notes: The touch photo and the honorable mention were a tight call. Ultimately we thought the touch photograph did a better job at telling the story. For those that didn’t place, consider your framing. Some images didn’t rise to the level of others because things were slightly off with framing or the frame could have been adjusted completely.
