First place: A tight crop on a great reaction that really captures solid emotion. A clean photo, with solid composition and balance. We enjoy the skate in the image. There is more space where they are looking than behind them. It’s edited well, with sharpness and good tonality. This was a difficult category. This photographer is clearly a great sports photographer and should keep looking for these decisive moments. We felt this was a timeless hockey image that was composed, photographed and edited well.
Second place: What a look! The second-place winner has captured the timeless emotion of winning! We loved the timeless moment of excitement after a game. It was great to see the ball, the fams, and the trophy in the shot. Lots of huddle photos were good, but the expression captured here takes the cake.
Third place: The hug to his coach after a big win could not have been captured better. We loved this moment! It shows such intense feeling of joy with gratitude to the coach. Fantastic job. The other person in the frame adds to the overall emotion with outstretched arms, ready to go in for the hug. This is a great, timeless slice of life.
Honorable mention: One of the judges really loved this photo. The way the wrestler is outlined by a clean, black background really draws focus. The balance between him and his defeated opponent creates a stark contrast.
Category notes: There were a number of images that rose to the top of this category, which built some debate on which ones would place this month. Really nice work
