Judges Comments

Sports Action was a very tough category to judge, with a wide variety of peak moment frames that competed with each other. A number of the photos that didn't quite make the cut might have won in another month or region. First place - Immediacy, framing and light quality drew the judges to this frame. There were a number of other basketball convergence photos, but this one felt the cleanest and most engaging in the end. Second place - Angle and timing elevated this image into second. We liked the ambiguity of the moment - we weren't just sure how the play turned out until reading the caption. Third place - A soccer photo unlike others we've seen. The framing by the net is terrific, and the fact that the players are teammates added to the intrigue.
