Judges chose first place for its spontaneous emotional content but only after taking a close look at the subject's eyes and deciding she was not looking at the photographer. Judges were struck by the emotional content of the third place image but kept it from being in second after reading the caption stating that the hands were being held to the location of a donated kidney, which didn't make sense given the location of the kidneys as being at the back of the abdomen. Second was moved into the finalist category for its depiction of a unique scene and vivid color.
