First Place: “Top Star” has everything to make a good portrait — great light, sharp focus and fun action frozen in place. Second Place: We thought “Hobo” was a unique way to take a portrait of a store owner. The light is great and gives the viewer a good sense of place. The little details throughout the photo also give a sense of who the subject is as a person. Third Place: “Jaeda Diaz” is a well-done portrait shot with the nice light at dusk. We appreciate the sharp photo as the subject is in action. Alternate: We like the intense eyes given by the subject in “Flag Queen.” The light on the subject and in the background is great. We also want to note that there was a nice photo story submitted, but unfortunately it was entered in the wrong category.
