South – November 2024 – Feature/Single

Judges Comments

First Place: This photo has great peak action for a feature! A tight crop keeps everything just inside the frame and allows us to feel the takeoff. Other details like the texture of the snow, add to the image. It’s all in the details. The image is just slightly off the ground, there is no snow interfering with seeing the subject’s face, and the person coming in from behind adds to the overall scene. This is a very strong, well-photographed moment that encapsulates the timeless slice of life we are looking for in a feature image. Great work! Not an easy thing to do when the lens is wide open. Second place: This is another knockout image in a strong pool of features. We absolutely loved the layering and precise composition here. The lighting compliments the human form of these bodybuilders, while everyone holds a different pose. The small detail of the mirror capturing a face is a nice touch. Third place: The way the light streams through this scene and glints off the horns really stood out to us. The fog adds to the light stream, making the composition feel like a timeless moment captured with an artistic bent. The softness hitting some of the faces helps maintain some detail in a shadowy image. Strong repetition. Honorable Mention: This photo used really creative composition to make art out of something that may otherwise have been rather basic. Definitely shows what it means to see an image, rather than what’s right in front of you. Category notes: There were some really great submissions this month! Ultimately, we chose images that we felt captured great moments or stood out graphically. We considered timelessness, slice-of-life moments, and category placement. Great work to those who entered this category. There was back and forth with the judges for some time. You didn’t make it easy for us!
