First place: This is a really tight, self-contained story! The photographer has captured a wide range of emotions from laughter to tears of joy, all inside a courtroom. The photo story starts out with a bang! What a great moment. This was a clear winner for us. We kept saying, “YES!” and were thrilled at the skill and attention this photographer brought to the story. The tight edit made it even better. We are often judged by our worst image. It was great that every image in this set needed to be there and the story was better for having it. Great start, great end and a nice flow of story throughout. Brav(o/a)! This is wonderful and certainly something to be proud of moving forward.
Second place: Another fun story, there are a number of great images that have a great range of moments. We especially liked some of the choices the photographer made to frame images, consider angles and ensure visual variety. The final image with the shutter drag was successful!
Third place: This was the kind of unexpected and humorous story that comes about when you ask how things work. We do wish there was a bit more variety in viewing angles, with the addition of tight shots helping to break up the wide. Specifically, a few more medium shots with action and details would have been ideal. Great work overall!
Honorable Mention: While some of these images were definitely stronger than others, we still enjoyed this story as a whole. Details like meeting up with the source early and capturing the fans were worth making sure this received mention. Good work looking for interactions and reactions.
Category notes: All of our winners this month were lighthearted and positive stories. What we really looked for was how a story was being told. There was one serious story that was a strong entry, but it did not have the required title card and sequencing could have been adjusted. Please remember to double-check you’ve met all of your entry requirements prior to submitting so we can put everyone in the mix!
