Northwest – November 2024 – Sports Action

1st place: The player hurdling and his expressive eyes made this photo stand out from other images. But for the contest you are allowed to re-crop your images. For photo galleries and different clients, you may be required to crop at a 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratio but for the contest crop the image so it looks at its best and don’t be afraid to crop to a square. Leaving out the #71 player in the brown uniform on left makes the more image more impactful. It’s acceptably sharp. But to split hairs and consider the fine details you can go down to ISO 3200 or 4000 on a Z8 and bump up your shutter speed a little from 1/1000 of a second. Larger megapixel image sensors tend to need more shutter speed to stop the action compared to film and earlier smaller digital sensors especially for leaps and receptions in the air. The motion is most evident in his splayed-out fingers in his right hand and the cleats on his left shoe. Usually 1/2500-1/3200 will stop the motion better with a larger megapixel sensor, though 1/1600 will work in a pinch. 2nd place: This photo was the best cropped photo of the group with nice peak action of two players diving. There is much less motion blur in this image shot at 1/2500. 3rd place has a great moment of contact but also don’t be afraid to crop it square and take out most of player #7 on the left. 1/1600 shutter speed helped stop the action.
