We were surprised by the number of spot news entries. By past judging, this is usually a thin category due to the nature of newspapering. Three quality wins here by photographers who quickly made it to the scene. First, a very nice moment following a house fire. Second, a first responding officer to a rollover accident where a woman was trapped in her vehicle. Good storytelling moment. Third, a clean photo of police take down of a protestor. The detained man fell right into the shaft of light.
