First Place: The winning image is striking because of the use of interesting light and an unusual moment. The video light from the camera person in the foreground illuminates the subject, but keeps the rest of the group in the dark. The blue hour is captured just in time. Wonderful lighting and good caption writing. Second place: Ha! A fantastic make-us laugh moment in the news! This image has a good angle to exaggerate this as an extreme cereal pour moment. While we would caution against up the nose photos normally, we think it’s good to break the rules here. Beware of editorializing in your caption writing. Still, this photographer nailed it and when we see that image, we think about St. Patrick's Day no matter what year we are in. It’s a timeless feature image. Well done! Third place: What a gorgeous, graphic image! Keeping all the shadows in was a must. The photographer was able to position themselves in the right place for the time of day. They kept just enough grass to play with their frame. This is another timeless image that shows the photographer's style. Honorable Mention: Category notes: Let’s start by saying there were some solid submissions in every category this month. We loved this image and would have placed it in a weaker month. There are many things to love here. The time of day was great, you have a cream and brown donkey hugging and the clouds behind are visually striking. We were also impressed that this wasn’t a planned event, but just a person with a visual eye seeing something, stopping and making an image. Keep this donkey photograph! It will be good now and well into the future. Thank you for making us smile. Category notes: This was a very strong category this month! Story topics varied widely and really did a good job of showing slice-of-life moments that you are hoping for in a features category. Features are not easy to make, so the fact that there were so many good ones means people are really thinking about their photography. Don’t be afraid to crop, if it helps us see the graphic part of your image, watch your focus, watch your backgrounds and wait for that iconic decisive moment. Some images were very close, but not quite there. Keep making photos! We really enjoyed this category.
