First place: Believe me when I say I wouldn’t think that a photo story of the same person, wearing the same outfit, doing the same thing would take first place, but each one of these photos is just outstanding! I think this is a great example of how using good lighting, creative composition and excellent eye can make a story really stand out. Second place: This story shows that the photographer was looking out for a variety of good moments, between action and features. The informational captions did not go unnoticed and are a mark of good journalism. Some of these images are really knock-outs. Well done. It was a tight race! Third place: The controlled burn photo story was very well done. There are two incredibly strong images in here that really pulled this one above some others. The story was good, timely and captured some excellent moments. Honorable Mention: This photo essay did a great job using visual cues to let the viewers understand what was happening. Great details. Category notes: In photo essays, remember that how you edit is an important consideration. Having strong lead images and removing photos that don’t add much can make or break your story. Also, please don’t forget visual variety! Including strong details, portraits or establishing images will enhance the medium images with action.
