Midwest – November 2023 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

Please consider asking photographers to include a first frame story summary or a meaty caption in the first image so that it’s clear what the story is about. Several of the entries could benefit from a tighter edit. First: Excellent captioning. This story has the best narrative arc of the entries in this category. The entry’s narrative and news value help it rise to the top. Nice variety of images with tight, mid-range and loose shots. The story contains a solid portrait as well as good interaction and emotion. Photographer might want to consider a tighter edit. Second: The story starts strong and drops off. Judges liked getting a glimpse of the subject’s life outside of the judo studio and wanted to see more of it. The images presented could use a tighter edit. Good lens variation and use of foreground and background. This entry requires a summary and thorough caption information. Third: Solid story summary. Judges commend the photographer for getting access to this family. The images show some interaction and emotion but needs more. Judges encourage the shooter to continue working on this newsworthy story as it would add to the narrative arc. The story calls for a posed portrait of the family, possibly in front of the house. The house is important and viewers need to see it either as part of a portrait or in the background as the subjects go in or out of it.
