Judges Comments

A strong category. There were a few opportunities where we wished photographers would have been a little more daring, thought a little more out of the box with graduations or celebrations to move beyond generic moments. First place was a great take and emotion from an event that we are sure was full of them. It was nice to see a sidebar from the traditional cardboard boat race collapse photos and we liked that this photo took a hard look to read what was going on, but in a good way. Really nice lining up layers, was nice to see a quieter moment and one that was wide and up close instead of a boat across the late cleaning. We liked third place more until we read the cutline, its a good moment from a city council meeting. It however reads more of them being kicked out, which wasn't the case it was just moving into executive session I'm sure all non members left. And most importantly the real moment here is out of focus at left that you don't even notice until you read the caption with the individual who made the comments having a confrontation with a protestor. We would have jumped a desk to get that shot.
