Overall, some portraits did not feel that they fit into the category, others took interesting risks that we applaud if the final result slightly missed the mark, and a few contenders were disqualified for lacking required caption info of the date photographed and the published date if taken outside of the contest period.
First place, artificial light was used well here and the use of the location to create an interesting composition made it rise to the top.
Second place, good light and location made for a clean and effective, ain't broke don't fix it sports portrait. Good caption info also was a factor
Third place, while some artifical light could have helped separate the subject further from the background, the environment greatly added to the portrait and made us get a clear sense of the gym and Glenn. The combination of the caption info with the photo worked well.
