There were not many entries for this category and we felt only two were worthy of awards. Other entries had strong visuals but did not fit the description of the category and would have benefitted from more time spent photographing to better portray a narrative with photos from different scenes/days.
First place: It is clear that the photographer spent a lot of time with the subject and, in doing so, we get a great sense of Teila as a person and competitor. There is a great variety of images both compositionally and in showing all of the facets of her life. The final image is also a fantastic ender and kudos to the photographer for being there for that moment.
Second place:
We thought the story could have benefitted from a tighter edit. But, it is a well done day-in-the-life story that gives us a sense what her title means and the responsibilities it entails while still showing her life as a teenager.
Judges:
Chris Day/The Commercial Appeal, Steel Brooks/Freelance
