The winning image was chosen because of the composition and light. We almost chose the photo of the man soldering as the winner, but didn't think it perfectly fit into the portrait category. It does meet the base requirement of having a person in it which is why we felt it could stay in this category. The image placed second it because it is so visually striking. Immediately grabbed our attentions. The third image was a good thought, but we felt it might have been stronger with some of the background cropped out.
