New England – October 2022 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

Light category, not that many entries, so the true picture stories that photographers spent time on really stood out as opposed to others which were picture stories from daily assignments. First place had good intimate moments, you can tell the photographer built trust with his subjects. Could have benefitted from a tighter edit though. Same with the second place story. Would have edited out one of the kayak pictures. Third place was an interesting story about gravestone repair, good detail shots, but we would have ordered the images to work together better. Wide shots together and detail shots next to each other don't work, they should be broken up to make the story flow better to the viewer's eye. The alternate of the rodeo were good pictures from a daily assignment, but again, we would have ordered them differently for a better visual flow. The order didn't make sense with quiet pictures and action pictures right next to each other instead of breaking them up.
