Once again the blur between news and features was discussed extensively. This category can be so difficult, so much daily news is mundane and lacking in drama, or emotion, that the photographer needs to find a way to bring aesthetics into play for images to stand out. First place brought a laugh from the judges. We initially were going to dismiss it as a photo op, but decided the photographer deserved credit for just going with it, and getting the composition and the moment right. The protest photo in second place could have been toned better, but we liked the relatively clean composition, and the body language of the nurse at center frame, with her feet off the ground, made for a pretty good news moment. The baptism photo in third was clean, with nice light, and a really great capture of the moment frozen in time.
