Northwest – August 2022 – Portrait/Illustration

Judges Comments

A fairly strong category considering the small number of entries. Most of the portraits had decent composition, use of light, and a good sense of personality, or at least context, but the top three jumped pretty quickly, with first place being unanimous and decisive. The technical challenges of a portrait in the wee hours of night with tricky light and yet composed so nicely, with the laser pointer effect so … effective, really won us over. The lighting done for the portrait of the paranormal expert really stood out to the judges. The lighting is simple, and clean, and really effective at catching the viewer’s eye. The suicide prevention activist, with his really eye-catching bus, was a nice candid portrait, with great light. We debated where the composition might be improved to lead the viewer’s eyes better, but never quite settled on a solid suggestion.
