Judges Comments

Contests, protests and parades are events you expect to get high energy and emotion. The winners we picked took much more storytelling. First place was a nice tight edit with a variety of pictures and good caption information. We want to see more — where are these people now? Second, the motel story literally made the judges cringe with the details. We wish there was maybe one more human element since the story is about 80 people being displaced. Third, the bread story, also would have benefited from more people and less details and a nice closer, finished bread? Someone eating the bread? The photo editor should have figured out a way for the photographer to have more time to follow the man in the collecting of the leaves. Some of the other interesting stories would have benefited from a tighter edit. Just because a package ran in the paper doesn’t mean all the images need to go into a contest entry. Some of the protest stories included unhoused people that were unrelated to the story and seemed gratuitous.
