The first place essay was the clear winner for this category. The photographer clearly had the trust of their subject and great access to tell a compelling story. The second place essay was a nice collection of photographs that told the beginning, middle, and end of a story. We decided not to award the only other entry for this category because we didn't consider it to be an essay.
