Our first place winner was an emotional scene, quietly portrayed to emphasize the loss for the family. This could have been a press event with microphones, but the tightness of the frame and simplicity of the photo focuses the viewer on the emotional impact.
Our second place image is a fun example of my favorite photo category of WTF is going on here?! The big shoulder in the left part of the frame isn't great, but we go right to the eagle on the table who is laying out just like a human getting a procedure. Those staring eagle eyes make this whole thing work.
Our third place winner we totally passed up the first time because it seemed like such a regular classroom scene. We came back to it because of the feeding-frenzy quality of it and then read the caption which told us this was a story about substitute teacher shortages. The context gave this frame more meaning and was a good illustration of the pressures facing school staffs. The substitute in the middle of the frame also has a detached look on her face which adds to the whole scene.
