Southeast – July 2021 – Feature/Single

Judges Comments

Not necessarily surprising that this category had the most entries, from an overall regionally meager offering, because the stand-alone feature has become the bread and butter at so many publications. Most of the entries were rather mundane, routine events rendered routinely. Pretty much everything was solid, publishable, work, but nothing was particularly remarkable. In the end we did find several frames that we liked above the rest. First place, the back to school shopping, was as genuine a “moment” of humanity we saw. There was nothing pretentious, nothing flashy, but a nice clean composition with good light, nice color and texture and that aforementioned sense of humanity. It happens all the time, all over the world, and this was a nice peek into that quiet, intimate scene. The graduation scene that came in second was another of those almost unexpected moments. The photographer gets credit for breaking away from the easy and obvious closer-up photos of the graduates adjusting their caps and gowns and found a way to show the eager anticipation with a different composition. The body language of the graduate peering around the curtain really won us over. Third place goes to the delightful moment (from an event that might almost qualify as general news?) with great faces, nice framing and use of layers and nice light.
