The fact that there were almost as many portrait entries as there were in General News felt, in our estimation, as a sad commentary on the reliance on the portrait over good documentary news work in the newspaper world today. We agreed that photos of people speaking at press conferences are NOT portraits, or illustrations, so we really only had a few photos to really consider. First place went to the well-executed four-photo series of athlete portraits. The photographer did a really nice job with a variety of poses and lit them all quite well. Second place for the gritty boxer portrait. The glean of sweat and the harsh contrast of the available light made for a real feel of being there. The veteran holding a photo of his deceased daughter was simple, clean, with nice light.
