The first-place photographer was able to show the impact of the George Floyd murder sentencing outside of the actual courtroom by focusing on the emotions of the people around courtroom and shooting scene. The juxtaposition of protesters’ faces and body language to the guards’ made this the judges’ second choice. A photograph of the opening of a church from Covid restrictions won third place. Including the thermometer in the frame was key.
