We decided the dearth of entries in spot news could be a hopeful sign that the members in the region decided not to force the issues and enter marginal images. Of course, sadly, most of the entries we did see were pretty marginal. We opted to only recognize two places from the five entries. First was the only genuine moment out of the entries. The emotion is visible and the composition captures everything we need to know. This was not a begrudging choice, this one frame was a winner. In second we opted to give credit to a photographer for the stamina and effort to make an image out of a difficult situation. The technical merits may not be there, but that speaks to the challenge, and we see a lot of backs and the body language suggests the drama is waning.
