Judges Comments

First - The photographer takes advantage of the rain to produce an unconventional portrait of the kind of person who is normally portrayed in the most conventional ways. The photographer maximizes the use of the umbrella to harness unusual light and act as a clean background for the subject. Many photographers would shy away from the falling rain, but this photographer saw a way to make the rain work to their advantage. Second - Good use of light dramatically separating foreground from background. This classic portrait is not only technically perfect but also reveals a lot of personality in the portrait. Small details - the dollar bills on the hand wraps, the tattoos, the spartan gym – add up to a lot of personality. Third - This is a competent environmental portrait. The photographer manages to include a lot of storytelling details: the sketch of the prototype, the plans, the materials, the tools. Lighting the glass from below was a nice touch.
