New England – April 2021 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

Every story in this category has a photo with some kind of technical flaw – especially overexposure. Stories become stronger when those weaker photos are removed. All the stories showed strong work in a short amount of time. Investing more time – with repeated visits and a greater variety of locations – would result in stronger coverage. First - The judges appreciated the tighter edit in this story. There were fewer photos, but the photographer maintained visual variety. Second - The photographer made great use of that misty light. There are strong graphics and a strong sense of space and action. The post-production on the photos (there is a degree of over-sharpening) gave the judges pause. Third - This is a good story but need not be confined to class activities. The photographer could add depth to the story showing more interactions, revealing relationships. The photos do a great job of depicting the expected activities and depicting the space. Including off-moments – when things go wrong, when surprises happen, etc. – could add color to the experience.
