This was a strong category despite many submissions better suited in other categories and multi-photo submissions that were marked down for a few subpar images. First place is a tender, humane moment between two different kinds of fire victims assessing their new future together. Second place is a good example of how composition and color and emotion come together for an effective news photo. Third place impressed judges with the photographer's ability to work inside a tense situation and to use the full frame to include important elements.
