This category was rich with photos we would all be happy finding on our respective feature hunts. There were also more than a few that didn't really reach that level. We came to a top eight very quickly, and then whittled. Our top three all placed because they caught our eye immediately, were well executed, technically and journalistically. First place just blew us all away, perfect timing, difficult light and yet it holds together nicely. The composition is right, not too tight, not too loose. the quintessence of the decisive moment. In second we really liked the quiet moment between father and son at a protest. The light is gorgeous, the sense of connection palpable, and the composition gives all the context we need to sense the feelings. Third was our favorite among the classic summer features. The light is perfect, the child's expression really says it all. The color and textures give the photo an almost hyper-real look.
