Judges Comments

This category was full of redundant protest photos. They all show the “what” of people screaming and holding up signs but not the “why” which is beyond the photographer just showing up and making the expected photos. We wanted to see something that really stood out and showed the why, which is sometimes hard to do, but that’s the job of the photographer to figure out. First place: This photo is beautiful. The photographer made a nice photo out of a visually interesting situation. This caption also provided a lot of context, which helped elevate it over other entries. Second place: This image was different from all of the other protest images. The photographer found their subject with a quiet moment and made a clean frame out of it. The composition has some interesting aesthetic qualities about it. The way each person's arm seems to connect to the next really helps lead your eye through the frame. The lack of information in the caption brought this image down for us. Who is the demonstrator and who is the victim in the photo? What is their story? Third place: We appreciate this photographer taking the time to find the right composition and make the photo. The symmetry within this frame works well.
