Overall, this category was truly disappointing. Portraiture is an important part of modern daily newspaper photography. In our opinion, it is a skill every newspaper photographer should possess. First place is a simple photo of a compelling character. While this picture could certainly be more interesting, it works. Second is a simple 'observed portrait' that holds up fine for the subject. Third place uses somewhat dramatic and focused light to create and effect and mood. While it works reasonably well, it was a bit cliche for many of us.
