Judges Comments

Many of the series could have been edited down, a couple of them had individual photos that were among the strongest in the competition, but the less impactful photos weakened those submissions enough to take them out of the running completely. Captions for this category were often way too wordy – telling every detail of the story – and didn’t really function effectively as captions as a result. Wish more of the photographers had gotten closer – some of the images felt a little timid. They missed that sense of intimacy with the subject that fosters the viewers emotional investment in the image. 1st place: The photographer found a sense of whimsy and fun within the frame by waiting for that moment and shooting from a low angle. 2nd place: The photographer found the right face with the right expression to illustrate the event.
