The first place entry was the strongest work in the category, but could have benefited from a tighter edit. 9 images in the entry could have easily been edited down to five, however it was still a powerful collection of images. The second and third place photos were of similar subject matter, following powerful storm damage, but the second place image had stronger composition with the woman in the frame actually adding more emotion and expression to the moment conveying more of a sense of loss. Not a lot of entries in this spot news category as has been the trend for a while, but a few really good images quickly emerged to separate themselves from the group.
