New England – March 2019 – Photo Story/Essay

Judges Comments

This category was tough, which is a pleasant surprise. Image variety really set winners apart in addition to strong storytelling. First place - Case and point on variety. The photographer worked every one of these scenes and that adds so much to the body and storytelling. Second place - Again, image variety and a variety of moments set this apart. Execution could be stronger on a number of frames from framing to toning, but the subject matter is strong and the story holds up. Third place - Really didn't want to go with the pigeon, but...... The frames were well made and overall better photos deserve a place. You don't need the pigeon in every frame. It's obvious the story is about the pigeon, and you made some good frames of the pigeon, but don't need 10 frames with the bird in it. Work around that. That's what moved the pigeon into third. The execution on the seniors needs some work and while the image variation holds up, the images individually just weren't strong enough.
