This was a category we really had to sit on for a bit. There were several pictures that were in the wrong category. Some might have placed if entered in the correct category. First Place: This picture demonstrates the goal of every photo assignment: make a visually compelling picture of the event you’re covering. This picture has layers, strong graphic qualities, human emotion and just enough mystery to entice the viewer to look further. Second Place: It’s a moment! We like moments. The photographer was rewarded for their patience with a great shot of emotion during what we assume is a long day of spelling bee coverage. Kudos for staying awake! Third place: strong moment with a couple standing among their belongings as they try to sell it after being evicted the night before. Good awareness by the photographer and newspaper.
