There were only five entries in this category, but the top three entries showed that the photographers worked to gain access and the trust of their subjects. All of our top choices could have benefitted from tighter edits without losing their overall impact. We were impressed by how the first place story was able to use the physicality of the sport to sensitively capture transgender body issues. Second place tackled an important issue in a difficult environment for access. This story showed the full process, but we did wonder if trying to focus on a single prisoner might have produced a more intimate narrative. Third place had several solid storytelling moments, but the edit showed some redundancy.
