The judges felt the first place photo captured the innocence of a child during the influx of asylum seekers at the U.S. border. The juxtaposition between the wall of policemen standing over the young boy was accentuated by the low angle the photographer used. The second place image was a great moment. The placement of hands from both subjects really made the shot. You can really feel the woman’s loss. The third place image had a nice graphic combination between shadows and composition. The way the man stands up on the right shows his age and that it’s at a veterans ceremony. The judges wish the names of the men were in the cutline.
