First of all, big props to most of the entrants for their levels of access and the amount of time spent. Our first-place entry illustrated a beautiful mix of moments, good use of light and thoughtful approach (especially for a story subject that we saw photographed numerous times in this contest). The photographer for the second-place entry spent such a tremendous amount of time utilizing impressive access but the essay itself was held back a little by being just a few too many pictures too long – a tighter edit would’ve likely elevated it to first place. Our third-place entry had a commendable mix of respectfully photographed moments and compositions but we were puzzled by the edit and the inclusion of the rogue black-and-white image.
